From Warehouse to Dynamics 365 F&O: A Real-World Case Study You Can Simulate

If you’re currently working in a warehouse and dreaming of transitioning into a tech career with Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O), you’re not starting from scratch, you’re already more qualified than you think.

Warehouse roles involve real-world processes that directly connect to key areas in D365 F&O, especially within Inventory Management, Warehouse Management, and Supply Chain modules. If you’ve worked with goods-in, returns, or picking, you already understand the workflows D365 is built to manage. Here’s how you can simulate a real-life case study using your experience and build a project you can show employers.

Case Study: "Contoso Outdoor – Warehouse Operations Scenario"

Background: Contoso Outdoor is a mid-sized supplier of outdoor equipment. You work in Warehouse 11, handling daily tasks like receiving goods from vendors, processing returns, and picking items for customer orders.

Your Role: You're acting as a System Support Analyst learning how to map real warehouse tasks into D365 F&O. Your goal is to simulate common processes, record your steps, and build your understanding of the system.

Objective:

  • Simulate Goods-In (Purchase Order Receiving)

  • Process a Customer Return

  • Pick and Ship items for a Sales Order

  • Record each step with screen captures or video

  • Write a short explanation of what happened and why

Part 1: Goods-In (Purchase Order Receiving)

Scenario: 50 units of "Camping Chair" are ordered from a vendor.

Steps in D365 F&O:

  1. Create a Purchase Order (PO) for Item A.

  2. Confirm the PO.

  3. Register the product receipt when the goods arrive.

  4. Post the packing slip.

  5. Check inventory levels to confirm stock has been updated.

Key Tip: Highlight storage locations, product dimensions, and the stock transactions view to show inventory movement.

Part 2: Customer Return

Scenario: A customer returns 5 defective Camping Chairs.

Steps in D365 F&O:

  1. Create a Return Order linked to the original Sales Order.

  2. Register the returned items.

  3. Inspect and choose whether to return to inventory or scrap.

  4. Post the return and adjust inventory.

Key Tip: Take note of disposition codes and use quality inspection features if available.

Part 3: Sales Order Picking

Scenario: A customer places an order for 10 Camping Chairs.

Steps in D365 F&O:

  1. Create a Sales Order.

  2. Release it to the warehouse.

  3. Create and process a work order for picking.

  4. Register the pick.

  5. Post the packing slip and invoice.

Key Tip: Demonstrate the pick process using work confirmations and warehouse mobile app functionality if available.

How to Document and Share Your Work

Record Your Walkthrough: Use free tools like:

  • OBS Studio

  • Loom

  • PowerPoint (with screen recording)

Write a Short Summary for each scenario:

  • What was the business problem?

  • How did D365 F&O solve it?

  • What were the key steps?

  • How would you explain the solution to a stakeholder?

Put it All Together: Create a small portfolio or blog titled: “Warehouse Process Simulation in Dynamics 365 F&O” This becomes a real project that proves your understanding and initiative.

Final Thoughts

Your warehouse experience is your advantage. By simulating the work you already know inside D365 F&O, you’ll not only deepen your technical understanding, but also build a compelling case to employers that you’re ready to move into a support analyst or junior consultant role.

Just because you don’t have real-world experience yet doesn’t mean you can’t create your own. Simulating real scenarios and documenting your process is one of the best ways to build credibility, confidence, and practical skills.
